Margaret, a resourceful customer from East Anglia, emailed me the other day with a suggestion for an innovative use for our window insulation film.
As well as using it to insulate her windows, she's used the film to seal a large and draughty Victorian marble fireplace, which wouldn't take a chimney pillow because the previous owners had fixed a metal plate inside the chimney.
She says, “we have to work at keeping warm... draughts in all shapes and forms are the Enemy!”
Here's how she made it work:
1. Cut the film to the right size to cover the fireplace
2. Get the tape fixed as firmly as possible
3. Place the film very gently in place
4. Keep lifting it and replacing until you have got it right
5. Do not fix the film firmly until you know you have it just right.
6. Use hair dryer to tighten film and get rid of wrinkles.
“If the film is placed correctly in the first place then the hairdryer heat will do the rest. The result is absolutely invisible until you stand to the side of the fireplace with the light from the window on a sunny day shining on it.”
You can see from the picture, Margaret’s fireplace still looks great. "For draught exclusion, I reckon the film is unbeatable," she says.
